That's not only embarrassing, it's very unprofessional. If the list doesn't offer a personalization code, then just put "Hello" "Hi" or "Greetings" in your salutation.
If the list offers a regular mailing and a credit mailing. Use them both. Credit mailings are usually more responsive but not always available until you build up credits by either buying them or by reading emails sent by other list members that offer credits.
